In the past, ‘man’ referred to human kind and people in general, and here it is captured through the essence of one person, yet representing everyone. The poem uses a number of qualities of humanity that bind and free us. It is within these connections and opposing forces that the magic arises, much like the way love can heal and hurt, ultimately transforming us. The repetition of ‘Man is ha’ mirrors the frequent use our own names at different points in our life, whilst our identities continue to change and grow reflecting the human experience that magically shapes and reshapes us.
